AdLock for browser Through Difficulties Though AdLock for Mac is up in arms, it’s still very much a work in progress. We’re still having to make on-the-spot decisions on matters arising due to significant limitations and restrictions imposed by Apple. We started working on our adblocker through the use of kernel extensions (KEXT) methods and did a great success in development. Soon, At WWDC19, Apple announced the deprecation of KEXT starting from OS Catalina as part of its intention to modernize the platform, improve security and reliability, and enable more user-friendly distribution methods . In this scenario, we had to rethink our product and heavily modify it to bend with the wind of changes.
“Okay, we’re a warband of hoar-headed developers, nothing would stop us!” — we thought. But in reality, a sudden twist was waiting for us. As it turned out, novelties introduced by Apple had no exhaustive documentation, FAQs, or active forum discussions. Shaping AdLock for macOS with the use of a new approach stumbled several times across diverse problems and we had to elaborate decisions relying on the team’s intelligence and experience.
To the Stars The result of our meticulous work is armed and ready. Our brand-new adblock for Mac users is the youngest yet outstandingly efficient member of AdLock products family. In keeping with our best traditions, it provides a set of our best features for smooth and seamless removal of commercial content across the web and extra-reliable online safety & security. Here’s what you should expect to see in the current version of the new AdLock for macOS.
Eye-candy Design We’ve always held that “the less is more” when it comes to the application design. Minimalism is about keeping the interface simple, uncluttered, and user-friendly. We’ve always thought about the product from the end user’s perspective and did our best to shape the elegant and intuitive UI. Some would say minimalism is easy, but it’s not.
With that in mind, we’ve decided to reimagine our product’s design and bring novelties to the usability of AdLock.
Hours of sketching and wireframing resulted in a completely new appearance. IOS users already have a chance to try out new designs (in case you missed our recent release, go ahead and check this article ).
SPOILER ALERT New design for all our products is coming soon. Expect it in upcoming updates 🙂
And yep, we also implied two themes (dark and light) for the new AdLock for macOS. Here are a couple of screens:
Robust features set The way Apple content blocking works has forced us back to the drawing board to recreate and reimagine popular features. Brainstorming resulted in the following set (as for now):
AdblockingContent filters clear the Internet and apps on Mac from intrusive adverts, banners, redirects to “XXX” websites, video/audio ads, fake “x” button ads, timed popups, and all that stuff even before it’s loaded on the page. Websites load faster and clean of distracting bullshit. Privacy protection Any counters, trackers, bugs, and other scams will be disabled. AdLock won’t allow anyone to monitor your actions online or steal personal data for their selfish ends. Safe browsing and enhanced firewall AdLock carefully checks every page and element for any malicious or phishing content and blocks dangerous requests. We won’t let you fall victim to the fraudulent and rogue activity of cybercrooks. Annoyances filter Disable all distracting elements on the websites so you see only the content you need.Flexible adjustment Take control of your browsing experience: whitelist pages or whole websites when needed, blacklist them again — it’s up to you.
