In 1998, Herbie Hancock embarked on a journey, covering the works of George and Ira Gershwin. Arguably jazz music’s most prominent pianist covering one of one America’s greatest pianists / composers. The result was magic, Herbie’s catalog speaks volumes, most notably this was his 42nd album released….take a minute and reflect on that…..Herbie also enlisted artists such as Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, and many many more. The end result was a beautiful tribute and masterpiece. He paired Stevie Wonder’s harmonica with Joni Mitchell’s beautiful voice on “Summertime” a classic moment in music. A few years later, Herbie enlisted his long time musical companion to work on a tribute to Joni called River : The Joni Mitchell Letter, since Joni is a long time favorite of mine, obviously I hold this album dear. Herbie is a man of infinite talents and musical fortitude, yesterday he celebrated his 62 birthday and we should all be so thankful for all his contributions to music as we know it. While these are all covers of classic material, he is still able to masterfully perform and lay claim to them. Bringing the best of the song out as well as the best in himself.
Herbie Hancock + Stevie Wonder + Joni Mitchell = Summertime
