Who are the Afros? Little is known of the mysterious group’s origins. Legend has it that Jam Master Jay and DJ Hurricane (Beastie Boys) were just finished watching a certain Robert Townsend movie called Hollywood Shuffle. They hatched a scheme which would ultimately lead to the development of The Afros. The group consisting of Hurricane, Cool-T, and DJ Kippy-O and reportedly maybe a dozen others, was featured on the very next Run DMC song, “Pause” which served as the b-side to “Ghostbuster Rap” from the blockbuster Ghostbusters sequel. Jay decided to release their debut album Kickin’ Afrolistics on his label JMJ Records. With help from co-producer Davy DMX, the album was well received and the group began touring with Public Enemy. With tracks like “Kickin’ Afrolistics” and “Feel It” everyone from Slick Rick to MC Serch were rockin the Fros. The future looked bright, however, Jay had to concentrate his efforts on Run DMC’s Back From Hell album, which led to the Afros being put on pause and nobody ever went back to start the track up. Nobody knows what happened to the Afros, DJ Hurricane went on to continue to deejay for the Beastie Boys until prior to their Hello Nasty release and released 3 solo projects as well. What would the world look like had the Afros been allowed to continue to exist? The world may never know, one thing is for sure, it would have been a whole lot more funky………..
