Leo “Bud” Welch is 81 years old and hails from Bruce, Mississippi…..a town you probably have never heard. Not to worry, the town boasts of a little over 2,000 residents. However, as one of those residents Mr. Welch has carved out a living by performing on the Church circuit. Originally a blues singer, Bud modified his sound for the non-secular side, in order to sustain consistent work. The work was so consistent that for over 35 years he continued this life. While working for a timber company. finally, Leo decided it was time to try for his break. Similar to the story of Charles Bradley (if you don’t know, google is your friend), Leo Welch picked up the phone and cold called Big Legal Mess, a record label in Oxford, MS and asked if they’d be interested in putting out his record. After fate stepped in when an intern almost turned him away, he was invited to play for BLM’s Bruce Watson. He was signed immediately and tomorrow, January 7th, Big Legal Mess will be releasing Leo Welch’s Sabougla Voices. Welch’s sound is equal parts blues and gospel and one thing is certain it’ll keep your foot stomping and your head bobbing from front to back. You can purchase the album directly through Big Legal Mess or from iTunes or Amazon at the links below. If you’re in Oxford you will be able to pick up a copy at End Of All Music record store.
