Producer Imperial has linked up with visual artist Agnes & Lupus for a visions and rhymes project which Illect Recordings. The visuals and beats are accompanied by quotes from everyone from C.S. Lewis and Chuck Palakniuk to Christ. The video is dark and raw, a play on the duality of man. The project will be called Triptych, more information coming on the release as soon as we have it. I’m really digging the video, everything works really well together, the quotes, the beats, the video works in splendid harmony. So much so, you’ll need to watch it several times in a row, concentrating on each individual segment to take it all in.

Blue Note Records announced today that on June 10th they will be releasing Jose James While You Were Sleeping the follow up to his label debut No Beginning No End. NBNE was one of the star releases in 2013 and While You Were Sleeping certainly has a lot to live up to. Jose is no rookie though, before signing on with Blue Note he was releasing music on Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. He released two abum there The Dreamer in 2008 and Blackmagic in 2010. Both of them are good records in their own right, what they offer more than anything is the opportunity to witness the growth of an incredibly talented artist. He has also worked with Chico Hamilton, Junior Mance, and produced the recently released Rising Son from Blue Note mate, Takuya Kuroda. One of the stand out tracks from BlackMagic was the last track on the album “The Light”. It’s beautifully composed and the melody is beautiful. I urge you to check out his projects, and in June when his new album drops you can join with me in celebration of a slightly delayed birthday gift.
Harn Solo and Ya Boy Hardheaded team up on some Pro Prospek live orchestration while sprinkling some SuZe on the hook. Stooges Brass Band’s Cameron Johnson provides the Saxo-Harmonies through out the track. This is my first time checking out Ya Boy Hardhead, he holds his on the track, it’s tough to rock over a beat with all the movement this has. Harn handles the track with ease, riding the beat like a true professional. Pro Prospek is developing a great sound for himself. This track was done entirely with live instrumentation, which brings a great sound and makes so much since with New Orleans rich musical heritage. The beats embody the essence of the Crescent City.
The Robert Glasper Experiment is joined by Raheem DeVaughn during a show at La Cigale in Paris, France. There are some surprises hidden in there which I’ll let you find for yourself. Bass Solo (cough* cough*) And the cover of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”. Man…..anyway, enjoy some soulful and jazzy tunes. Raheem channels his inner Dwele on “No Worries” before going in to Raheem’s 2007 single “Woman from Love Behind The Melody and providing some assistance to a nice version of “Ah Yeah”. Of course you can’t have a Robert Glasper Experiment show without some J Dilla which comes in the form of “Nag Champa” from Common’s Like Water For Chocolate album.

Few albums have had the type of impact that Breath From Another from Esthero had on me. The beats were completely hip-hop influenced but Esthero’s voice was so ethereal. The album was entirely produced by Doc McKinney, who has since worked with everyone from The Weeknd and Res to Young Buck and Drake. The weather today in Jackson is overcast and a little on the chilly side, so this album is perfect for today. Check it out and if you enjoy, go pick yourself a copy of it up and check out her other releases Wikked Lil’ Grrrls, We R N Need Of A Musical Revolution (EP), and Everything is Expensive.
The Nike Blazer was destined to be a skateboard shoe. And as such today, most of the best renditions of the classic silhouette are done by Nike SB. It has the typical Nike Zoom Air mid-sole and padded tongue. The screened anthracite swoosh here for example, works perfectly with the cool grey suede upper. The vulcanized sole with gum bottoms round it out. Throw in a skater friendly price tag at $85.00 you got yourself a perfect shoe for getting those winter time skateboard blues worked out. The title track from the movie by the same name….hence the title track label. Bobby Womack has one of the most distinct voices of the past half century. His newest album Bravest Man In The World, did not get nearly the amount of praise it deserved. “Across 110th Street” is one of those tracks that gets better as time goes on. It paints vivid images of a 1960/70’s era Harlem.
How could I be more amped about The Boondocks season 4 starting on April 21st? Well, check out the music….that’s a start….
The James Brown Biopic is coming everybody!! Be prepared.
“They tried to kill James Brown today. Do you want to go down in history as the man who killed the funk?”
