In 1998, Herbie Hancock released his uptenmillionth album Gershwin’s World. An album of jazz standards performed by Herbie and a slew of Jazz music veterans. One of the most beautiful and sublime songs on the album is Joni’s rendition of Gershwin’s “The Girl I Love”, which eventually also became “The Man I Love”. Both versions have been recorded by any and everyone in the music world. None as well as this though. Joni sits alone atop my list of favorite female vocalists in history and is honestly not in serious jeopardy of ever losing said position. Here she is at top form, delivering an amazing performance worthy of it’s own singular place in the Smithsonian museum.
