Wes Pendleton’s Refined EP drops next Tuesday, so here is another leak from it to get you prepared. It’s smooth, it’s soulful, it’s melodic…it’s good….
Quiet Storm
Man Made from Detroit musician Zo! is a must own for anyone who believes music is dead or enjoys some smooth soulful music. One of the stand out tracks on the album gets a video treatment and features Phontigallo and Eric Roberson and crew steppin’ to the grrooooooooooovvvveee. This on the heels of Phonte and Eric announcing they’ll be working on a collaborative album, that will be a must have no matter when it drops, although they said it’ll be in 2015……Go ahead fellas, I can wait….
Mela Machinko is a Brooklyn native and known for her family appearances on albums from Pharoahe Monch to Skyzoo. She recently put out an EP titled 9AM Blues. It is rich with soothing harmonies and hip-hopesque production handled primarily by Mr Len (Company Flow). Overall it is 8 solid tracks of exactly what one would expect from the Brooklynite. If you have not hear her before, she takes me back to the days of Les Nubians and The Jazzyfatnastees, an era I call OkaySoul. If you are unfamiliar with those artists, then get to googling.
Todd M. Simon, Itai Shapira and Adam Berg are the production trio known collectively as The Decoders. They have released some incredible music this year and as an added bonus they let some people remix/rework some of their music. Music which includes vocal talent like Noelle Scaggs, Raul Midon, and Alex Isley is re-done by Ohmega Watts (Lightheaded), David Morris, Jeremy Sole, and others. Remaking music which is within itself a re-imagined work is tricky at best. However, these artists give they best in created something fresh and beautiful. The end product is clean and leaves you wanting much more. The project is available on Bandcamp and other venues, I suggest you check it out.
This is Joss Stone at her finest, I don’t know what it is about her that makes her put more into the songs she covers than her original material. This is the first single from her upcoming album The Soul Sessions Vol 2, dropping soon. A well-done cover of the Chi-Lites’ song. She’s also slated to cover songs from The Honey Cones, Sylvia, The Dells, and more, on the album. Much in the same vain as the original Soul Sessions Vol 1, which won her so much critical acclaim. I’m excited to hear her rendition of the Casinos hit song “Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye”……
Somethings just go together, and Erykah Badu covering Roberta Flack with the help of the Flaming Lips? That’s like nutella on a warm crepe sprinked with powder sugar and garnished with bananas and strawberries on an afternoon in June………
