Here is some great footage of Marvin performing “What’s Going On?” live in 1972. Nothing short of brilliant. I am not sure what this footage is from, that does not matter though. What does matter is that it is right here right now.

Ibeyi’s self-titled debut album dropped to critical acclaim last year. Equipped with equally impressive videos the sister duo took the world by storm. “Stranger/Lover” was the fourth video they released from the album.
Michael Kiwanuka has an album dropping on May 27th, which means happy birthday to me! Love & Hate will be the sophomore release from the British soul singer who has drawn comparisons to everyone from Bill Withers to Randy Newman. Even Adele has taken note as he was invited to open up for her during her 2011 Live tour. “Black Man in A White World” is the first song from the album and receives a beautifully shot b&w video. I’m a sucker for soul claps, as well. So this thing is like a homerun to me. If you have a chance check out his debut album Home Again. Soul music is always relevant.
Gregory Porter’s new video for “Don’t Lose Your Steam” is the latest from his forthcoming album Take Me To The Alley which will be dropping on May 6th. Has far as I’m concerned Mr. Porter is a national treasure and should be treated as such. He has given us three incredible albums and this is shaping up to be his fourth. I’m confident in saying that nobody is making music like him right now. His music comes across effortless.
I was awoken this morning to news that sadly we all probably knew would come one day sooner than we hoped. Phife Dawg of a Tribe Called Quest passed away last night. Several years back a couple of friends of mine and myself were at a boat party in Long Beach sponsored by Myspace Music and hosted by Phife. As special invited guests we had access to him. We all knew he was a funky diabetic. But, this was the first time I noticed just how sick dude was. That night even with the oversized jersey we could all see how frail he was and he moved around sheepishly the entire evening. When in front of everyone he would pool all his energy to give the crowd everything he had. Then when he was not on the mic, he was sitting on a chair by himself off to the side with his head down. My only interaction that evening with him was a dap and a smile. At a later date, I had a chance to tell him how much his music meant to me and I took it. This was something I’m sure he heard a million times before and after me, but, his reaction was one of genuine appreciation. You could tell that he loved what he did and the way people felt about it. As the years went by I was fortunate to have a few stories regarding the 5 Foot Assassin aka Dynomutt. I cherish those memories. Few people have the impact on their genre of music the way that he did. While I am saddened by the transition of Malik Taylor, I choose to continue to celebrate his life through his music.
In the realm of underrated hip-hop groups, The Cella Dwellas might reign supreme. Realms N Reality is very under appreciated. If you don’t believe me then hit up your Spotify/Apple music apps and check it out. I cannot do all the work for you
Royce Da 5’9 should not need any introduction to anyone. So it should be of no surprise that he is preparing to release his most personal project to date this year. Layers will mark his 6th solo effort and comes on the heels of the critically acclaimed collaborative effort PRhyme with DJ Premier. The album will be released on April 15th and is distributed under his own Bad Half Entertainment imprint.
The lead single from the album “Tabernacle” was dropped a couple weeks ago and the video has now followed. The song describes in detail what Royce refers to the most important day in his life. The day his son was born, he lost his grandmother, and met Eminem. Those who have followed his career know that these three events have each molded his music in different ways. The video even features his son playing a young Royce. Check it out and pre-order your copy of layers below.
Bahamadia is one of the illest emcees on the planet. The way she flows on is akin to water flowing down a mountain. It fills every crevice without missing a beat, flowing continuously. “Uknowhowwedo” was the second single from her debut album Kollage. One of Illadelph’s finest treasures, no doubt!
Pusha T is one of the illest. Period. No denying this.
