Gregory Porter’s new video for “Don’t Lose Your Steam” is the latest from his forthcoming album Take Me To The Alley which will be dropping on May 6th. Has far as I’m concerned Mr. Porter is a national treasure and should be treated as such. He has given us three incredible albums and this is shaping up to be his fourth. I’m confident in saying that nobody is making music like him right now. His music comes across effortless.
June 10th will mark the release of Jose James’ highly anticipated Blue Note release While You Were Sleeping. This album is gearing up to be a little bit of a departure from the last release an ode to his musical influences growing up.

Jose James has been making a name for himself for the past few years. From last years No Beginning No End to his stirring rendition of “Everybody (Loves Sunshine)” on Takuya Kuroda’s Rising Son album, which James also produced. The man just does not stop either, this summer he will release his second Blue Note offering, While You Were Sleeping. With the previous release being more soulful and jazz inspired, he promises this one will be more reflective of some of his other musical influences such as Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix. Those two influences couldn’t be any more apparent than on the first single from the project, “EveryLittleThing”. Keep June 10th marked on your calendar, you’ll want to pick this album up and check it out.
Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band return to Blue Note Records for the release of their album Landmarks on April 29th. The group was recently in France for the St. Emilion Jazz Festival and luckily for us, so were cameras. I can’t say anything other than just watch and enjoy this one. You’ll be glad you did, and then on April 29th, purchase the album. You can pre-order it at the links below.

Blue Note Records announced today that on June 10th they will be releasing Jose James While You Were Sleeping the follow up to his label debut No Beginning No End. NBNE was one of the star releases in 2013 and While You Were Sleeping certainly has a lot to live up to. Jose is no rookie though, before signing on with Blue Note he was releasing music on Giles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings. He released two abum there The Dreamer in 2008 and Blackmagic in 2010. Both of them are good records in their own right, what they offer more than anything is the opportunity to witness the growth of an incredibly talented artist. He has also worked with Chico Hamilton, Junior Mance, and produced the recently released Rising Son from Blue Note mate, Takuya Kuroda. One of the stand out tracks from BlackMagic was the last track on the album “The Light”. It’s beautifully composed and the melody is beautiful. I urge you to check out his projects, and in June when his new album drops you can join with me in celebration of a slightly delayed birthday gift.
Blue Note Records is continuing their trend of recent dominance or return to dominance if you will. Following last weeks release of Takuya Kuroda’s Rising Son the label prepares for Oakland born trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire’s The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint on March 11th. “Our Basement (ED)” is taken from the new album and features Becca Stevens assistance vocally. Becca Stevens’ name might sound familiar, she contributed to Esperanza Spaulding’s Radio Music Society. If this is any indication then Blue Note is going to absolutely own the first quarter of 2014.
Trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is releasing his debut Blue Note album Rising Son on February 18th. This probably the most anticipated for a new jazz project I’ve been since Canvas from Robert Glasper. That version of “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” sounds great. You can preorder the album by clicking the link below. Check out Takuya’s back catalog as well and his work with Jose James.
