After being sent his “Down The Rhodes” interview about “Nautilus” I decided, what better song to dedicate to today. I’ll spare you the mile and a half long list of people who used this track. Instead, just sit back and enjoy the last song on side B of One.
Bob James “Nautilus” has been sampled numerous times in Hip Hop music. Run DMC, Slick Rick, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Ghostface Killah, Tribe Called Quest, and many more have tried their hand at it. In 98, when Xzibit released his sophomore album 40 Dayz & 40 Nightz, it featured the stand out tracks “3 Card Molly” which featured the Golden State Warriors (Saafir & Ras Kass) and “LA times”. However, for me the highlight of the album came on song number 16, featuring, a much younger, Montage One and produced by A Kid Named Roots the Bob james flip was simple but the way X and Montage rhymed over it gave it an eerie yet beautiful feel. Speaking on the pitfalls of growing up a youth in Los Angeles the track just moved me. I was much more open to listening to tracks which were personal and spoke with a message than the usual jiggly BS…. I remember I just kept skipping back to the beginning as soon as it was done, I don’t think I listened to anything else for a week or so.
